Adenomyosis

When Endometriosis occurs within the muscle wall of the uterus, this is called Adenomyosis. This means that during the lead up to a period, women who are affected get severe pain of the uterus, because the uterus carries a build up of thinkening cells with bleeding with no where really to go. It is like they are carrying a big bruise within the uterus in the pelvis and this pain will not usually go away until the period is well over.

If a woman only has Adenomyosis and not Endometriosis, then often the Pelvic Ultrasound Scan and even the Laparoscopy will be reported as ‘Normal’ despite women reporting symptoms similar to Endometriosis. An MRI Scan can often diagnose Adenomyosis, but the only true confirmatory way to prove if a person has Adenomyosis is when a Hysterectomy is done and the uterus analysed in the Laboratory. Thankfully, we can usually treat Adenomyosis like we do with Endometriosis without necessarily needing to do a Hysterectomy.

Please be aware that each of these are a lengthy chapter in their own right so it is impossible to cover everything here. It is important to see a doctor to discuss your individual case in addition to taking on the information from here.
